Frome Festival 2008's welcomes both and more.

Saturday 5 July, watch Writers in Residence in Frome's shops windows create a story under the public eye. Keep an ear out for the Soap Box Poets, echoing out on the hour, from 11am-3pm.

I am the Great HorseSunday 6, Katherine Roberts invites fans to come and discuss her new book, I Am the Great Horse , the tale of Alexander The Great seen through his horse, Bucephalus, at Frome Library from 1.30pm . She also takes a two-hour workshop for those keen to write for 9-13 year olds, 10.30am-12.30pm.

The same Sunday, Ronda and David Armitage offer a masterclass in illustrating and writing books for children in the 4-8 age group, also at Frome Library, 1pm-3pm. In the morning, they will delight their younger fans with a colourful talk from 10.30am.

What about becoming a travel writer? Writer Laurence Shelley and travel writer Diana Cambridge round off Sunday with a discussion about what editors look for in vacation prose at Frome Library, 4pm-6pm.

Rose Flint Mother of PearlIf poetry is more your muse, join Rose Flint, this year's winner of the Academi Cardiff International Poetry Competition, at Rook Lane Chapel on Monday 7 as she explores women's relationship to natural wilderness. Flint can he heard again as she launches her new book, Mother of Pearl, at Café La Strada on Friday 11.

Monday 7 also sees the return of Festival Poetry Café, with the surreal genius of Nathan Filer keeping things in good disorder. Find out who becomes this year's Festival Poet Laureate.

On Wednesday 9, Frome authors offer their favourite desert island reads over tea and cake at Trinity Hall.

Steve VoakeSaturday 12, romantic novelist Katie Fforde, judge of this year's Frome Festival Short Story Competition, announces her winner at Orchardleigh Golf Club, 12pm-2pm. Frome children's author Steve Voake (pictured) also gives a talk and Frome Town Mayor Councillor Alvin Horsfall will present prizes to the winners of the Kumon Children's Book Review.

Attention all young hacks! Frome Festival 2008's Journalism Competition is open to anyone, aged 12-17 years. Attend a press briefing at Frome Library on Tuesday 1 July at 4.30pm to collect a press badge. Cover the festival then write an article before the deadline of 5pm on Friday 11. The winning entry will be printed in the Somerset Standard .

For those with a burning desire to improve television drama, join Life of Mars's Matthew Graham at Frome Library for a scriptwriters' workshop and one-to-one appraisals on Sunday 13, 10am-12noon.
